Healthcare.gov Marketplace: A Freelancer's Navigation Guide

The official Marketplace site has everything you need — knowing where to look saves real time during enrollment.

Laptop showing a website

Healthcare.gov can feel like a maze the first time you're shopping for coverage without an employer plan. Here's a map of the specific sections freelancers use most.

Start with the self-employed section

Healthcare.gov's dedicated self-employed page ↗ is built specifically for freelancers and gig workers — it explains eligibility, the enrollment process, and how 1099 income is treated differently from a W-2 for subsidy calculations.

Use the subsidy estimator before enrolling

The savings and subsidy estimator ↗ lets you enter your expected income and household size to see a realistic premium estimate before committing to a plan — essential given how much subsidies can change the real cost, as covered in our Health Insurance Options guide.

Know your enrollment window

Open Enrollment runs annually, typically November through mid-January. Outside that window, the site will walk you through checking eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period — relevant if you've just left a job or started freelancing full-time.

Updating your income mid-year

If your freelance income changes significantly, Healthcare.gov lets you report updated income directly through your account at any time — don't wait for the next Open Enrollment to correct a subsidy that's become inaccurate, since it affects your final reconciliation at tax time.
